REPOST: HARD STANCE by Jose Alejandrino

"He has logic behind him."

I know some people don't agree with the hard stance of President Duterte in dealing with the corrupt, druglords, terrorists, and other hardened criminals. I know they don't agree with me when I support and defend the president's hard stance. Those who don't agree are free to disagree.

When I look at their logic, neither can I agree with them.
History shows that much blood was shed by conquerors trying to unite squabbling tribes into a nation. Attila the Hun, William the Conqueror, to cite two. We are still a bunch of tribes. To unite us needs someone firm to pound sense into silly minds.

History shows us that hundreds of thousands perished in the French Revolution, American Civil War, Russian Revolution, Spanish Civil War before people returned to their senses.

More recently, we have the drug wars in Mexico where tens of thousands died mostly at the hands of druglords and the civil war in Syria where tens of thousands died and are still dying because of ISIS terrorists and foreign meddlers and hundreds of thousands of civilians displaced by that war.

Here in our country the casualties from our drug war are much smaller and yet much noise has been made about it at home and abroad. No distinction is made between legitimate police operations and those executed by henchmen and assassins of druglords. We have had Marawi invaded by ISIS-affiliated Maute terrorists with the help of some foreign terrorists, the city devastated by the fighting, and insane LP members complaining about martial law.

I ask myself, Where is the logic of Duterte's critics? Does it need a revolution to pound some sense into these idiots? Would his critics prefer tens or hundreds of thousands die than the few thousands lost in the drug war so far? What are those few thousands compared to a much larger catastrophe that could visit us?

Duterte is right in saying he would rather kill a few thousand druglords and their supporters than see the millions of youth in our country destroyed by illegal drugs. He would rather exterminate all the terrorists than see the towns and cities of Mindanao become other Marawis.

He has logic behind him. His critics have none except their personal interest and political agenda. That is why the vast majority of Filipinos support him. That is why the LP is being marginalized because it lost its credibility.
