WHO'S AFRAID OF RevGov?

By Paulino Jose Misa

I must admit that to many of the less politically aware, RevGov can sound like a terrifying proposition, especially if the DDS pretenders in our midst are to b be believed. On the contrary, the current situation where the criminal masterminds are the ones benefiting from the protection of the law and are free to pursue their selfish agendas is far more alarming.

While the fear-mongers and the faint of heart would conjure up nightmares of the chaos and destruction of many violent revolutions in history this notion is perhaps the least likely scenario.

In the first place, This would not be a revolution to violently overthrow the existing government, which would be bloody indeed, but rather a revolution to allow the President a free hand to clean up the Aegean stables of the government by simply denying the criminals and the corrupt the means to twist the law in their favor. As the military is firmly behind the President, I would think a revgov proclamation would be rather like a mix of Proclamation 1081 and the Edsa revolution, none of which were particularly bloody.

This would also not be a revolution to replace a corrupt or despotic leader with an untried and untested replacement who could turn out to be even worse. Rather, we already have a tried and tested leader who has shown more ability, competence and concern for the Filipino people than any other President in history. He is the only one without the encumbrances of political alliances or financial backers. He has shown no interest in using his position for personal gain and is serious in demanding the same from everyone else.

And he has proven this by his accomplishments too numerous to mention in just over a year in office. It is not likely that we will see the likes of him again any time soon. And were he not all of the above, calling for a revolutionary government would indeed be a risky option as our history has shown clearly enough.

But then again, should we judge and hobble a hero simply because of the traitors and weaklings that came before him? Or should we recognize our good fortune and unite behind him to break the bonds which have enslaved us throughout history?

Some bring up the bogey of foreign intervention. The best answer would probably be "Have their best efforts to date gotten them anywhere yet?". As to military intervention, the question would have to be "with what excuse?". Finally, the last question would be "who would they propose to install?". Any political analyst would know that Leni is a non-option as any attempt to install her would likely be met with violent protests if not a coup d'etat.

If the President were even just 10 years younger, perhaps we might have the luxury of "santong dasalan" even while running the risk that the enemies of change might somehow get the upper hand in the long run. And yet, with the magnitude of the grave, long-standing problems facing our country even that might still not be enough. Thus, in the few short years remaining, we need to go into "santong paspasan" mode if we are to even have a chance of meaningful change and progress.
