A picture above describes the barbaric mode of torture employed by the Americans against our Filipino countrymen during the Filipino-American war
THE "WATER CURE"
The "treatment" consisted of spread-eagling a prisoner on his back, forcing his mouth open with a bamboo stick and pouring gallons of water down his throat.
Helpless, the prisoner was pumped with water until his stomach was near the bursting point. Then he was questioned.
If he refused to answer, an American soldier stood or kneeled on his belly, forcing the water out. One report by a U.S. soldier told how "a good heavy man" jumped on a prisoner’s belly "sending a gush of water from his mouth into the air as high as six feet."
This cure was repeated until the prisoner talked or died. Roughly half the Filipinos given the cure did not survive. How many Filipinos were killed by torture is not known, but the extent of the practice is documented by a letter sent home by a soldier who bragged of inflicting the water cure on 160 Filipinos, 134 of whom died.
A Harvard-educated officer, 1st Lt. Grover Flint, testified before the US Senate on the routine torture of Filipino combatants and civilians. He described the “water cure” as standard US Army torture.

Sam Mallari Bucu: AY, sabe ko nga e... nasa caption.haha. Nabanggit kasi 'yan sa Mabini's Ghost by Ambeth Ocampo.
Sam Mallari Bucu: Ang saklap nga neto. The word barbaric still seems to be an understatement. Such a cruel way to acquire information from the suspected people, when they can't even understand what the suspected people are saying in the first place... So imagine, how on earth would they end up with the information they are looking for with that scenario?
Joseph Liwanag: Now, they call it "water boarding".
Philclassic Kundiman Archive: Tatlong photos ng "water cure" meron ako but all of them looks merely like a "re-enactment" like this one. Talking of Mabini, without his "La Revolucion Filipina" we will never know exactly who is behind the assassination of Andres Bonifacio. Mabini gave evidence to the fact when he declares: "Ang pagpatay kay Bonifacio ay KARUMALDUMAL NA KAWALANGHIYAAN NI AGUINALDO, at ang unang pagwawagi ng sariling kapakanan at ang pagkatalo ng tunay na pagkabayani."
Jon Roz: We had it easy. The revolutionaries were skinning American POWs or burying them alive or mutilation, not really torture as it is slow death in the most gruesome manner. I rather be water cured.
As for Bonifacio's execution, there was also an article from the same book that had given details for that event. It was very much awful, indeed. :(
Joseph Liwanag: Yes, Bonifacio brothers (and their family) were subjected to a much more gruesome treatment. Gen. Luna had it easy from Magdalo Faction.
Philclassic Kundiman Archive: Aguinaldo masterminded everything from the "dagdag-bawas" voting at Tejeros where he won as President of the revolutionary government to the capture, trial and murder of Bonifacio.
Philclassic Kundiman Archive: Siyempre maghuhugas kamay si Aguinaldo and this he did after more than fifty years nang patayin niya si Bonifacio, sinabi niya:
Emilio Aguinaldo

Philclassic Kundiman Archive: Aguinaldo's Confession
Sam Mallari Bucu: Grabe, delayed reaction?
Philclassic Kundiman Archive : Delayed talaga! Remember, binuking na siya ni Mabini when he wrote "La Revolucion Filipina" prior to his death in 1903.
" - Apolinario Mabini
Philclassic Kundiman Archive: Double murder case...can you beat that?
Sam Mallari Bucu: Ah... It was in English, as translated by Leon Ma. Guerrero. If we are still asking questions about the deaths of Andres Bonifacio and Antonio Luna today, it is because Mabini has gone on record to point an accusing finger at Aguinaldo."
Philclassic Kundiman Archive: I'm not a fan of Ocampo as he tends to rewrite history according to his personal opinion tulad na lamang yung sinulat niya sa "Bones of Contention" where he overly emphasized that Bonifacio's widow was RAPED by one of Aguinaldo's men.
Joseph Liwanag: "The Filipinos had only one general, and they have killed him."
~ General Hughes, in reference to the assassination of Gen. Luna
Sam Mallari Bucu: 'Yung article din po ba e 'yung "The Last Days of Andres Bonifacio?" I still have to see the opinionated tendencies by Ocampo, but I really don't think Gregoria de Jesus' case was overly emphasized. It was indeed prominent, after all she was tied to Andres Bonifacio; she bore a testimony for the trial of her husband; and she was victimized by Col. Agapito "Yntong" Bonzon, Aguinaldo's officer and a fellow Filipino.
Philclassic Kundiman Archive: Have you read the official transcript of Bonifacio's 'mock' trial? It was Ambeth Ocampo who started that malicious TSISMIS that Gregoria de Jesus-Bonifacio was actually raped by "Yntong" Bonzon. Here's an excerpt from the official transcript:
"She added that after the encounter, the men searched for her. On finding her, they asked her where the money was hidden. When she could not mention any money, Colonel Yntong, ordered her to be tied to a tree and flogged, but his companions would not allow it.
At this the Colonel forced her to go to a house where there were no people and he wanted her to get that very moment a gold engagement ring, twelve pesos and a revolver. After she had crossed the street, Colonel Yntong ordered the people in a nearby house to leave the place and he forced her to ascent the stairs. When they arrived in Yndang, she was ordered tied again. This was not carried out because of the intervention of some soldiers.
The witness signed, attested to by the Secretary."
Philclassic Kundiman Archive: Look, if Colonel Yntong's companions wouldn't even allow him to have Gregoria de Jesus tied despite his orders (he ordered it twice but they refuse to comply) how could they allow him to rape her? Its obvious that the Col. Yntong's companions highly respects the fallen Supremo's wife.
"and he forced her to ascent the stairs." - Ambeth's malicious mind understood this statement as evidence that Gregoria de Jesus was indeed raped. But its not stated in the transcript that she was raped.
Philclassic Kundiman Archive: Ambeth presents a distorted image of the Supremo's widow as a weak and defenseless Filipina like Dr. Rizal's Maria Clara despite the fact that Gregoria de Jesus was a member of the revolutionary society KKK; she was a full-pledged Katipunera (her nom de guerre being Lakambini), a real soldier herself accompanying the Katipuneros during battles and skirmishes with her own riffle:
"I had no fear of facing danger, not even death itself, whenever I accompanied the soldiers in the battle, impelled as I was then by no other desire than to see unfurled the flag of an independent Philippines, and I was present in and witnessed many encounters. I was considered a soldier, and to be a true, I learned how to ride, to shoot a rifle, and to manipulate other weapons which I actually used on the ground without tasting food for the whole day, to drink dirty water from mud-holes or the sap of vines which, though bitter, tasted delicious because of my intense thirst. When I came to think of my life in those days, considering my youth then, I am surprised how I stood it all, and how I was spared."
- Autobiography of Gregoria de Jesus: THE KATIPUNERA
Philclassic Kundiman Archive: The Supremo's widow was later remarried to Julio Nakpil, another Katipunero and Bonifacio's Commander of all troops in the north. If Gregoria de Jesus was indeed raped, Nakpil would have murdered Bonzon as any brave and honorable Filipino would do to punish and avenge the grave crime committed against his wife's honor. Ambeth not only desecrates the sacred memory and honor of Gregoria de Jesus but also of her second husband, the Katipunero and true Patriot Julio Nakpil. SHAME ON AMBETH OCAMPO!!!
Philclassic Kundiman Archive: I guess I will never convince the die-hard fans of Ambeth Ocampo (like Sam Mallari Bucu) to accept my view. Anyway, I've read several works by Ocampo and most of them are excellent. Try to get a copy of the first edition of "Looking Back" and you will see how Ocampo tried to twist historical facts.

Thank you Philclassic Kundiman Archive for defending my great grandmother, Gregoria de Jesus from the malicous interpretation of historical facts by AO. This has been circulating the web for quite sometime. And I have this letter or article of Lola Goria more than twice to really decipher weather she was raped or not. there is no hard proof that she was anyway, and even if shere were raped why sensationalize it?
Thank you Philclassic Kundiman Archive for writing a good article about my great grandmother Gregoria de Jesus. I have read the said document and never did it cross my mind that she was raped, I wonder where in the world Mr. Ocampo got that interpretation. I just hope that it won't be sensationalized. It's not that I am biast because she is my great grandmom, all of it are based from the hard facts that was written in history.
